How to Get Over a Fear of Flying

If you want to travel the world, chances are, you’re going to need to do a bit of flying. However, many people have a fear of airplanes – myself included. I’ve been afraid to fly for as long as I can remember. Even as a young child, I was terrified every time I stepped foot on a plane. Yet, I love to travel. So, I had to find ways to deal with it. It is possible to get over a fear of flying and see the world. If you need a little help, here are some of the most effective coping strategies.

Consider the Statistics

Feeling anxious and nervous? One quick and easy way to calm your nerves is to actually think about the statistics. Did you know it is actually 261 times safer to fly from New York to Los Angeles than it is to drive there? It’s true! Air travel is actually one of the safest and most reliable modes of transportation. With planes getting inspected regularly and more sophisticated navigation systems in place, flying doesn’t have to be scary. It’s all about knowing the facts.

Prepare Yourself for the Experience

Sometimes, people get scared because they don’t know quite what to expect from a situation. What will the flight be like? Will takeoff and landing be scary? Will my ears pop? Instead of wondering and worrying, get the answers in advance. Ask friends or family members who have flown to share their experiences. Or, you may even want to look online. Find out as much information as you possibly can. The more you know, the less likely you are to panic. By preparing yourself for the experience, you’ll be calmer and ready for anything.

Think About the End Result

Want an easy way to get over your fear of flying? Think about why you’re doing it – or why you want to do it. Where are you flying? What will you do when you get there? Take time to think about your reasons for travelling. By reminding yourself, you will be less likely to worry. Be sure to picture all of the enjoyable experiences you will have after you land, too!

Find Your Inner Calm

This may sound a little crazy, but if you really want to get over your fear of flying, you need to find your inner calm. One way to do this? Learn to meditate while you’re on the plane. You can calm your mind by counting to 1000 or even thinking about a happy memory. Another idea before you fly is to use a self-guided hypnosis CD. You can buy one at a store or download something off of iTunes. It won’t work for everyone, but if you’re open to it, this just may help you tap into the relaxation you need.

Flying doesn’t have to be scary. Just think of it as a way to get to where you want to go. Don’t let your fear of flying hold you back anymore – take action! When you’re cool, calm, and collected, you’ll be wondering why you were ever afraid.
